2015 Hemingway Pilar Exact Replica

Bristol, Florida

"Pilar" is a replica of Ernest Hemingway’s famous 1934 Wheeler sport fishing boat. Every detail of the original vessel has been incorporated into "Pilar" after extensive design and build research.

Hemingway’s "Pilar" is credited with making big game sport fishing in the Bahamas and Florida a popular sport. The original hull was built by Brownell Boat Works in 1960 and designed by Walter McInnes for rugged offshore fishing.

All of the extensive restoration work and custom deck conversion design including “Hemingway’s flying bridge” was done by Walter Schulz of Shannon Boat Company. The hull was extensively rebuilt with new frames, planks, fastenings, etc. The underwater portion of the hull was covered with three layers of cedar veneers and two layers of epoxy saturated e-glass.The goal was to have a boat that was impervious to worm attack in southern climates and maintenance free for many years under heavy use. The varnished cabin sides were coated with multiple coats of Awlgrip coating for UV protection. All diesel engines, tanks, electric , pumps, plumbing, electronics, reverse cycle air/heat, refrigeration, microwave, etc. are new.

For prospective buyers interested in using "Pilar" for charter, she is designed to carry 12 passengers for tours or sport fishing.
